Car maintenance tips to prevent expensive repair costs
Given the increase in the cost of living, many people are putting off paying for vehicle maintenance. Whilst it’s an understandable choice to make, not maintaining a vehicle could lead to compromised safety and more expensive repair costs in the future.
- Change filters regularly –
Your vehicle’s air and oil filters can become clogged over time, so it’s important that they’re replaced on a regular basis. These filters should be replaced as part of your regular annual service and it’s a relatively easy task to complete. However, poor quality filters could result in irreversible damage to your engine in the longer term.
- Use your air conditioning – Air-con systems may leak over time, especially when not used regularly. Whilst you may not need to use your air-con in the winter months, it is beneficial to keep your air-con running at regular intervals to prevent receiving a large bill for air conditioning re-gassing.
- Keep the fluids topped up – This is essential to your vehicle’s performance and safety. Too much or too little oil in the engine can be catastrophic. The engine oil can be checked when cold using the dipstick or by using the onboard computer in more modern vehicles. You should always ensure that you are using the correct oil type for your vehicle make and model.
The coolant level should also be checked periodically, when the engine is cold.
In addition, low brake fluid can lead to a spongey brake pedal, which can be dangerous and also requires immediate attention at a reputable service centre. - Have your vehicle serviced regularly – A highly-skilled mechanic can conduct a full check of your vehicle during a service. A service will likely include checking all of the above measures, as well as additional tasks to maintain the safety and performance of your vehicle. This can help to spot minor issues, before they become dangerous and costly problems. Visit our blog ‘Why is it important to service my car?’ for further information.
It's best to keep on top of your vehicle maintenance to prevent dangerous and expensive issues. If you spot any differences in your vehicle’s performance, it’s usually best to have this checked at a local repair centre.
