The Top 5 Most Common Car Blemishes – and how SMART repairs fix them

Ebony Barker • January 16, 2026

Even the most careful drivers pick up small bits of cosmetic damage over time, whether it’s a scuff in a supermarket car park, a kerbed alloy on a tight corner, or a stone chip from the motorway.

These small blemishes might not always affect the way your vehicle drives, but they do affect how it looks and its value.

That’s where SMART repairs (Small-to-Medium Area Repair Technologies) come in. They’re fast, cost-effective, and perfect for tidying up minor cosmetic damage without needing a full body shop repair.

Here are the top 5 most common car blemishes we see… and how SMART repair techniques can fix them safely and efficiently.

1. Bumper Scuffs & Scratches - Plastic bumpers take the brunt of everyday knocks and scrapes, especially in tight car parks or narrow streets. The most common signs of bumper damage we see are scuffs and paint transfer, light scratches, small dents or grazing.

Using localised sanding, colour-matched paint, and expert techniques, we repair only the damaged area — not the whole bumper. The result blends seamlessly with the original finish, often within just a few hours.

2. Minor Paint Scratches - Whether caused by keys, bushes, handbags, or accidental contact, paint scratches are one of the most frequent issues we see.

We carefully assess the depth of the scratch. Surface marks can usually be polished out, while deeper scratches are machine-sanded, colour-matched, painted and blended back to a factory-quality finish. There is usually no need for a full respray, although we always advise our customers on when we think this could be a better option for their vehicle.

3. Alloy Wheel Damage – Damage to alloy wheels is extremely common, especially with modern low-profile tyres making wheels more exposed. The most typical wheel damage we see includes scuffs, scraped edges, light gouges and small chips.

✔ How SMART repairs fix this

We repair the damaged area and repaint in your alloy’s original colour. The result restores a clean, sharp, like-new appearance without replacing the wheel.

4. Small Dents – These are perhaps the most common blemish we see, usually caused by car park door dings, shopping trolley impacts, low-speed bumps or minor knocks.

✔ How SMART repairs fix this

Paintless Dent Removal (PDR) is used to gently massage the dent out from behind the panel. No paint, no filler, just your original metalwork restored. It’s quick, cost-effective, and leaves no trace of damage.

5. Stone Chips - Driving around the country roads across Lincolnshire often means dealing with loose road debris. Stone chips on the bonnet, bumper, and wings are incredibly common.

✔ How SMART repairs fix this

We fill each chip with colour-matched paint, smooth the repaired area, and polish it to blend with the surrounding surface. Whilst this is a great option to give the panel some protection from the elements, with most modern colours, painting would be required to produce an invisible repair.

Why choose a professional repair centre like CARS for SMART repairs?

Although some SMART repairs can be carried out by mobile operators, choosing an established accident repair centre offers major benefits. One of the biggest benefits is that the vehicle will be repaired indoors, in a controlled damp- and dust-free environment.

Many insurance companies use no-claims discount (NCD) to reward their drivers for not making a claim during a specified timeframe, usually a policy year. This, in turn, encourages sensible driving behaviour. For example, if four years pass by without a customer making a claim on their policy, they will have earned four years’ worth of no-claims discount. This discount usually results in a reduction in premium costs upon policy renewal. The discount will depend on the insurance company’s specific terms and the number of consecutive claim-free years. In some cases, there may be a maximum limit to the number of years of NCD that can be accumulated, and this should be checked with insurance companies on a case-by-case basis. Protected no-claims discount differs from standard no-claims discount in the way that an insurer may allow for more than one claim to be made before the discount is lost or reduced. A fee may be payable for this added layer of protection, commonly in the form of slightly higher premiums. We always encourage our customers to opt for the highest level of protection when it comes to their NCD. This will ensure that they have a greater level of cover if the worst happens. Always remember that if you’ve been involved in an accident that wasn’t your fault, we have a method here at CARS which enables us to repair your car without impacting your NCD, even if it’s not protected. We also have various excess support options available to our customers. Call us on 01472 453622 for further information.
